Spanish lore says the true origin began in NE Spain during the early 14th century. While transporting cattle to sell at the market men would attempt to speed the process by hurrying their cattle using tactics of fear and excitement. After years this turned into a competition, as young adults would attempt to race in front of the bulls and make it safely to their pens without being overtaken. This quickly established itself across Spain as a tradition which stands today.
The 9 day festival in Pamplona is in honour of San Fermin and the “Encierro” route spans for about half a mile through the old town of Pamplona. The 6 bulls weigh on average 570 kilos and race at 25 km per hour. Not to be messed with!
