Whale Watching in Iceland from Husavik

North Sailing pioneered Whale Watching in Iceland from Husavik only 20 years ago with their first boat out in 1995 to see the Minke Whales that were visiting the bay. However over the years more and variety of whales have entered the bay, with the Humpback Whale now being the most popular to view. White beaked dolphins and harbour porpoises are quite frequently seen, as is the colossal Blue whale. In fact there are 8 different species that can be seen which also include Fin whales and Sperm whales, though these two are much more unusual.

You have an exceptionally high chance of sightings with the High season in 2014 (May-Sept) having 96.86% sightings .

The area also has some of the largest bird colonies in the northern hemisphere and on your Whale Watching Trips you will also have the chance to see a wide variety of sea birds like puffins, gannets, arctic terns, shags, cormorants, fulmars, common guillimots and razor bills. In fact during the breeding season over 300,000 puffins make their burrows on Puffin island, and are hard to miss!

At Weekend a la Carte we always work with North Sailing for the whale watching tours as they only offer wooden whale watching tours on traditional Icelandic converted oak fishing boats – all lovingly restored. They now have a fleet of 7 boats, of which 2 have been converted to 2 masted schooners, which are the only gaff rigged boats in Iceland . The knowledge and know-how to maintain these gaff rigged ships had been all but lost in Iceland, and North Sailing are very proud to have rekindled the local craft-manship required to look after them.

Like Weekend a La Carte, North Sailing is a family run company – though they have managed to get 3 generations involved !  Some of the skippers have worked with them from the beginning, and many have for decades worked as fisherman in the area and so know where the whales will be going to feed.

The tours last 3-4 hours and you will be provided with warm overalls to wear as well as hot chocolate and a cinnamon rolls

Having carried more than 300.000 visitors in about 8,000 tours North Sailing is the most experienced whale watching company in Iceland and you can keep confident that you have a very high chance of sightings, staying safe, and having a very pleasant and fun time.
