Budget airline EasyJet is to launch a year-round service to Iceland, Travel Weekly reports.

The seemingly ever-increasing popularity of Iceland, particularly as a winter holiday destination, at which time visitors can see the Northern Lights, has led to greater demand for flights to the country. Consequently, EasyJet has decided to run a "full year service" to meet travellers' needs.

The new, but restricted, route was announced back in November and has not yet started. Originally, the flights were meant to run only through the spring and summer, however, due to such a good response, EasyJet will now expand the service to run from October 2012 onwards. Travellers will be able to book seats from mid March.

The new route will run from London Luton to Keflavik International Airport in Reykjavik, with the first flight taking off on 27 March. Already, 8,000 tickets have been sold in advance. Flights will operate three times a week on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday.

Commenting on the new route, EasyJet's commercial manager, Hugh Aitken, said to Breaking Travel News: "Our new route to Iceland has already proved to be successful with passengers at both ends of the route responding to our affordable fares.

"Iceland is an inspiring destination and all year round offers a unique experience."
