It's official - the best small airport in Europe is Iceland's Keflavik International Airport (KEF), IceNews reports.

In a comprehensive survey of airport service across the continent, conducted by the Airports Council International (ACI), KEF ranked top as "best airport for two million passengers or less".

The airport also came first overall in terms of service, which could prove helpful for those flying in or out of it on their Iceland Northern Lights holidays.

The survey pitched 54 European airports against each other, asking participants questions regarding the quality of nearly forty services. These included questions on the helpfulness of staff, the cleanliness of the airport and check-in times. Ease of flight connections and overall customer experience were also taken into account.

The award is nothing new for KEF, however. In 2009 it was ranked the best airport in Europe and came second in that category in 2010.

According to Iceland Review, the ACI said that Keflavik Airport excelled in every area - particularly as it created a "cosy atmosphere" and provided "total customer satisfaction".

Commenting on the award, Oli Bjorn Hauksson CEO of Isavia, the company that operates KEF, said: "We are extremely proud of these impressive results and the award confirms that staff members at KEF are world-class professionals. I would like to congratulate them on their impressive performance."
