Jordan's tourism sector is set to be a key player in supporting the country's economy in 2012, reports TTN Worldwide.

According to ministers, the tourism industry has been earmarked as one of the most important sectors for growth as the country looks for a bounce back in 2012.

New programmes will help contribute to the sector, claims the Jordan Tourism Board's (JTB) acting managing director Dr. Abed Al Razzaq Arabiyat.

In a candid interview regarding the board's marketing plans, the minister revealed that Jordan is looking to create a stronger online presence, to charter more flights from potential markets and craft a "Jordanian tourism identity".

As a result, the board hopes an increasing number of holidaymakers will consider holidays to Jordan and Petra as their trip of choice this summer.

"This year is a big one for Jordan!," claims Arabiyat. "Petra is celebrating its 200th anniversary since its rediscovery, with many activities to celebrate this momentous occasion planned throughout the year.

"Furthermore, the revived Jerash Festival will take place in the summer, with performers coming in from all over the world, as well as the continuation of the Citadel Nights and the Dead Sea nights that started in 2011," he added.

In addition, Jordan has taken such a positive stance when it comes to preserving its culture but increasing tourism and economic growth, it has been awarded the 2012 American Planning Association's Pierre L'Enfant International Planning Award.

Marie L York, APA board director, commented on the jury's decision to award Jordan, cited by menafn.com: "It will serve as a valuable model for regions facing the competing challenges of attracting tourism and protecting cultural resources."
