Swirling and swaying overhead, displays are usually greenish yellow but white, red and pink lights also frequently appear.

Day at leisure to explore Reykjavik; There are plenty of museums and quirky shops to keep you interested, as well as the old town and harbour.

Tonight you have a choice of how you would like to celebrate and bring the New Year in.

Option 1: Dinner and Firework Cruise

Tonight you will dine at 8.30pm in the delightful Hofnin restaurant in the old harbour with some tables having lovely views across the harbour. This family run restaurant is in a converted 1930’s fishing shed and focuses on classic Icelandic cuisine with a modern twist. Popular dishes are the shellfish soup which has become quite famous, the traditional fish stew, Char and the Icelandic lamb and beef. You will have a 4 course set menu (Beverages not included and payable locally).

Hofnin is perfectly located for your next New Years Eve adventure as the boat is moored right outside for your cruise to see Reykjavik´s World Legendary Fireworks Display, and if you are lucky the Northern Lights too!

The boat will leave the harbour at 11pm and returns approximately half an hour after midnight. The view from the sea gives you the chance of seeing ALL the fireworks over the city.

You will receive a complimentary glass of Bubbly as midnight approaches and, as the clock hits 12, raise a toast to the New Year.

Find a spot in the cosy indoor saloon or on the open-air deck wearing the warm overalls provided. Then, enjoy the views over the glittering lights of Iceland’s capital as your boat cruises out into Faxaflói Bay. There is a pay bar on board as well.

Keep checking for Northern Lights as well as it is not just the fireworks that you are hoping to see! This option is particularly popular for families though 10 is the minimum age.

Option 2: Festive Dinner and Bonfire & Christmas Lights Tour

Early evening (@ 5.15pm) you will be picked up from your hotel for your festive New Year Dinner and festivities at the celebrated Pearl restaurant dining on the 5th floor. Enjoy a 4 course celebration dinner with Reykjavik at your feet!

After the main course you will be picked up for the evening Reykjavik Bonfire & Christmas Lights Tour where you will celebrate with Icelanders at one of the bonfires that are situated all over the city. The tour takes about two hours after which you will return to the Perlan for dessert and the New Year Countdown!

At midnight, with a glass of sparkling wine, celebrate New Year by watching the fireworks from the panoramic balcony. From the Pearl’s 360° balcony, you have the best view over Iceland’s capital to watch how the Reykjavik sky lights up with fireworks.

Afterwards you can continue celebrating and dance to live music. There is a transfer back to your hotel at 1am or 2 am. This option is an extra £100 per person

DAY 3- 1st January
Self Drive exploring the Golden Circle and Onwards to Hotel Ranga

DAY 3- 1st January
Self Drive exploring the Golden Circle and Onwards to Hotel Ranga

Today you will experience Iceland’s dramatic landscapes and the magnificent Golden Circle.

Visit the spectacular Gullfoss waterfall, which can totally freeze in Winter; the Geyser where every 5 minutes an eruption takes place and finally visit the becalming beauty of Pingvellir, with its spectacular mini rift valley and home to the world’s first democratic Parliament founded by the Vikings.

Time allowing we would also recommend a visit to Kerid Crater, an impressive 55m deep caldera created after a Volcanic eruption.

Afterwards drive to Hotel Ranga. Hotel Ranga is famous as one of the best places in Iceland to see the world famous Northern Lights due to its location in an area where clear skies are more usual than elsewhere. As the hotel lies in a secluded countryside setting without external lighting the hotel provides an excellent base for viewing the Aurora without light interference.

We recommend sitting in one of the outdoor hot tubs with a drink in hand soaking up the atmosphere and with luck have the skies lit up by flashes of green light.

Alternatively Hotel Ranga has built their own first observatory a short stroll from the hotel in order to minimize light pollution, and they have an expert in there every cloud-free night with two high quality 11 inch computerized telescopes. The expert can teach you about the stars and the northern lights if they are out.

View amazing detail on Jupiter, see the rings of Saturn, and details on Mars. During the day you can observe the Sun, including sunspots in great detail and activity such as prominences and filaments.

Overnight at Hotel Ranga.

Northern Lights on top of the Glacier

We are very excited with this new offer which we have worked up with our “local man” on the ground near Hotel Ranga. Tonight he will take you up to 1600 M on top of the glacier on top of Eyjafjallajökull volcano in a SuperJeep to hunt the Northern Lights. The glacier cools the air creating clear skies which is what you need for the Northern Lights giving you an excellent chance of seeing them !

Even if they don’t show you will have an incredible evening gazing at thousands of stars above you – crystal clear in the darkness. The snow reflects the moonlight and the tiny lights of the villages can be seen well below you.

This is a 4 hour trip as it will take you 90 mins each way as you climb in your superjeep up the steep slope – an adventure in itself.

Price per person: £190 per person

Northern Lights Hunt with Bonfire

Tonight you will be picked up for a 3 hour adventure to hunt out the Northern Lights with one of the local mountain guides.

In a specially adapted 4WD super jeep you will be taken inland off-road to the back of the famed Mount Helka to try and see if you can find the Northern Lights. This volcanic area is near Tindfjallajökul Glacier whose cooling effect creates clear skies critical for spotting the Northern Lights. This area also has very few artificial lights to spoil your viewing as many of the farms in the area were abandoned due to a previous volcanic eruption.

The beauty of this tour is that the guide will take you to the best area based on the forecast to see the Northern Lights and so give you the best chance of seeing them.

Assuming you have not diverted to a different area to see the Aurora you will stop for a warm up by a bonfire and a hot drink in a cave whilst your guide tells you about both the Northern Lights Phenomenon and some of the folklore that surrounds them and local superstitions! Sometimes you are taken to the Black Volcanic Beaches where the Atlantic Crashes onto the Black Sands. The guide will take you to the best location for you to see the Northern Lights depending on the forecast.

DAY 4 - 2nd January
SuperJeep Tour tour of Eyjafjallajökull Glacier & Volcano OR Porsmork

After breakfast you have a choice of 2 SuperJeep adventures!

We work only with local guides who have lived their whole life in this area, belong to the Mountain Rescue Team and all have fascinating stories to tell of their experiences during the 2010 volcano eruption!

We always have fabulous feedback on how much our clients enjoy the personalised, relaxed guided experience.

Your off road Super jeep takes up to 10 people, in sharp contrast to the coach tours offered by other companies, who also cannot access many of the areas we take you to. This is serious off-roading!

EITHER
Eyjafjallajökull’s volcano Tour

This tour will take you as close as is possible to the new large crater in Eyjafjallajökull volcano from the 2010 eruption and to places where no hire car can go. We drive up the slopes of the glacier in a highly equipped Super-Jeep and on our way take in the astonishing view over the whole South coast of Iceland with it’s glaciers, and back across the Atlantic including the Westman-Islands. This tour gives you the perfect glacier experience; an exciting Super Jeep drive in the snow, walk on the glacier and the magnificent view over the south. This is real adventure.

OR
Porsmork valley Tour

Your guide will take you up between the three glaciers; Myrdalsjokull, Eyjafjallojokull and Tindfjallojokull. In your specially adapted SuperJeeps you will have the thrilling drive of fjording glacial rivers and driving across the flood plain to see the lasting effects and landscape changes following Eyjafjallajökull’s 2010 eruption.

You will be surrounded by an imposing mountain ridge and see spectacular landscapes. Stop at the stunning Seljalandsfoss waterfall , which you can walk behind and be mesmerised looking back through the falling water. If you wanted to see the “Raw Iceland” this is hard to beat!
