Day at leisure to enjoy Vienna. You are spoilt for choice for wonderful museums to visit.

Tonight you can enjoy a gourmet evening in the historic building of the Museum of Fine Arts. This is a unique experience where the museum is open exclusively for the diners from 18.30 until 21.00,and you can visit the art before,during and after dinner. The dinner consists of 3 courses, with the main course being served to you (Thursday only).

If this is not a Thursday we would recommend instead a candlelight dinner for 2 in the Prater, the Giant Wheel that has dominated the skyline of Vienna for 100 years. Have a private luxury cabin affording splendid views of the city. (This would incur an on-cost – See Below)

Romantic Visit to the Viennese Woods

After breakfast your private driver guide will collect you from your hotel for a morning in the wonderfully romantic southern Viennese woods to show you some of the most beautiful sights in the surrounding area of Vienna.

This includes the romantic Helenental valley and the former Mayerling hunting lodge. This is where Crown Prince Rudolf is said to have committed suicide.

You will also visit the impressive Cistercian Abbey of Heiligenkreuz and its medieval cloister which has recently become famous for it’s choir.

In 1912 an underground blasting operation in a mine went wrong causing 20 million litres of water to gush through the rock. The lower level galleries were flooded creating the largest subterranean lake in all of Europe; SeeGrotte. During WW2 SeeGrotte was used by the German military as an aircraft factory as it was protected against bombing raids, and produced the first jetfighter of the world, the HE162; a model of which is on display. Nowadays a romantic motor boat trip of 45mins takes you across the lake.

Please note from 1st Jan – 31 March Mayerling can only be visited on Saturdays and Sundays.

Take the Twin City Liner with outside seating to Bratislava on the famous Danube (@ 75 mins).

Disembark in Bratislava and having secured your luggage in your own private car take a 3 hour guided tour of this quaint and quirky capital, visiting the castle and taking in the view from the castle down onto the Danube.

Afterwards be transferred in your private car to Budapest.( @ 2 hrs)

This morning you have a private tour of both sides of the river – both Buda and Pest.

Passing by the Parliament you will cross the Danube from Pest to drive to the Royal Castle on the Buda side.

Here you will visit the Fishermans Bastion with it’s seven fairy-tale towers representing the seven tribes of Magyar and with a wonderful view across the Danube to Gellert Hill and to Pest.

You will also visit Matthias Church. On entering you will be amazed at it’s colour and warmth from the lovely floor to ceiling frescoes and colourful stained glass windows. Once used as the Coronation church of Hungarian Kings for centuries, it was also a Ottoman Turk mosque for over 150 years and is now a thriving Catholic church!

After a photo stop at the citadel drive back to the Heroes Square, the largest and most impressive square in Budapest before passing the Opera House and St Stephens Basilica.

Full day Private Tour of the Danube Bend

The area where the Danube breaks through the Visegradi mountains turning south to Budapest is one of the most picturesque regions in Hungary.

Your first stop will be Eszetrgom, the former medieval capital of Hungary. Here you will visit the largest basilica in Europe and Hungary’s highest building which is the impressive Roman Catholic church dramatically built between 1822 and 1856 right on the banks of the river.

Your private tour then continues to Visegrad, a town fortified in the middle ages to guard the trade route to visit the fortress located on the highest mountain-top.

Continue to Szentendre a picturesque Mediterranean artists town with colourful houses, narrow alleys and a vibrancy imbued from the Serbs and Dalmatians who settled here after fleeing the Turks in the 14th-17th century. Time allowing you may stop at a Ceramics museum before your return to Budapest.
