We have just launched a new long weekend break in Iceland which is Whale Watching in Husavik, the Whale watching capital of Europe, combined with a stay in Reykjavik seeing the Golden Circle and Blue Lagoon.
Our partner in Husavik just sent this news on the start of their Whale Watching Season in April. Though the main season starts in May we recommend June – Aug (inclusive) to ensure a good incidence of Whale Sightings. They have averaged 98% over the last 11 years so it’s a pretty fair bet!
Killer whales kick-start the 17th season of North Sailing! April
Knörrinn, with 13 passengers headed out to the bay into a glittering Skjálfandi bay with the magnificent mountains of Kinn graciously rising at the horizon.
After roughly two hours of dolphin watching, where the beautiful white beaked dolphins did what they could to entertain our guests, the skipper spotted something in the distance that looked like a blow. Was it a humpback? Or a minke? No, it became obvious when the first extremely tall dorsal fin emerged out of the water this would be no less than a Killer Whale, also known as Orca. Soon, the crew and passengers realized that there were small groups and individuals of Orcas scattered all around. A total of about 30 animals.
Knörrinn sometimes came as close as a couple of meters from the largest males. It was then a happy bunch of whale watchers that returned to Húsavik harbour at 5pm today.
